But when you sit down to fix Chapter 12, you can't put your finger on the problem. Scenes advance the plot, characters develop, things happen. It still drags.

Here's why it's invisible to you. Pacing is about information distribution, tension architecture, and scene compression ratios. Patterns you can't spot from inside the prose, but that a machine can flag in seconds.

Pacing operates on 3 levels at once.

Scene-level: how fast a single scene delivers new information. Chapter-level: how tension builds or bleeds across a run of scenes. Act-level: whether your structural promises (setup, escalation, payoff) land when the reader expects them.

You can have a scene packed with action that kills pacing because it front-loads everything in the first 2 pages, then coasts. And a quiet scene that accelerates pacing because every paragraph recontextualises what came before.

The middle-book sag has 3 common causes, and they all grow from the same root: you wrote the middle to figure the book out, not to deliver it.

Subplot sprawl. You bolted on a secondary character in Chapter 8 because you needed to understand the protagonist's relationships. That character now has 4 scenes spread across 80 pages, none of which touch the main plot until Chapter 22.

Each scene works on its own. But the reader experiences them as interruptions, because the through-line keeps stopping dead.

Tension reset. Your protagonist resolved a major conflict at the end of Act 1. Act 2 opens a new problem, but starts from zero.

The reader earned a tension level of 7 by page 100; you're asking them to care about a 3 on page 101. They won't.

The stakes feel lower even when, objectively, they're not.

Over-explanation. You wrote your way into understanding the world. The middle is where you buried that understanding: the magic system's limits, the political factions, the backstory that makes the climax land.

All necessary. But you're still spelling out things the reader already inferred (or could infer later) because you needed them nailed down to keep writing.

AI pacing tools detect proxies for these patterns. Sentence length variance flattens when you're over-explaining (long, careful sentences stacking up as you lay things out). Dialogue density collapses in subplot-sprawl scenes, because the secondary character isn't in true conflict yet, just parked in position.

Scene duration balloons in tension-reset chapters. You're working harder to make the reader care, so scenes that should run 4 pages stretch to 7.

A typical diagnosis looks something like this.

Chapter 12: 4,200 words across 3 scenes. Scene 1 (1,800 words) averages 22 words per sentence, zero dialogue for the first 600 words, and introduces 2 characters who don't show up again for 5 chapters.

Scene 2 (1,400 words) is entirely dialogue but circles the same revelation for 4 pages. Scene 3 (1,000 words) ends on the chapter's only actual plot development.

The tool flags it: scene compression ratio is inverted. You're burning 3,200 words to deliver 1,000 words of progress.

What AI can't tell you: whether the reader is emotionally ready for that progress. Whether those 2 delayed characters pay off hard enough to justify the wait. Whether scene 2's circling dialogue is repetitive or building dread.

That's the gap between what a machine spots in your data and what you lived through writing it. Those are editorial calls. But you can't make them if you don't know where the patterns are.
