1. What VSProse is
VSProse is editing software for novelists. It runs structured editorial passes — copy edit, line edit, proofread — over chapters you have already written, and returns suggestions. Every suggestion is shown to you as a diff. You accept it, reject it, or rewrite it yourself. VSProse never changes your files on its own.
There is AI in it and we say so on the tin. It suggests; you decide. It never drafts prose for you — every suggestion it makes is an edit to prose you have already written, and it will not write your manuscript for you. Separate tools in the app can produce reference material about your book — a synopsis, a character list, theme notes. Those are working notes for your own use, and they are never inserted into your chapters.
Your manuscript is a set of files on your own computer. We do not store it (see §2 and the Privacy Policy).
2. Your writing stays yours
You keep every right in your writing. We claim no ownership and no licence in it, and we claim nothing in the text you end up with after you have accepted or rejected our suggestions. Full stop.
The one thing we do with your text is the thing you asked for: when you run a pass, the relevant chunk of it travels through our servers to a model provider and the suggestions come back.
- Our servers store none of your prose. It exists in our API’s memory for the seconds a request takes and is never written to our disk or our database. What we write down is bookkeeping — page counts, tokens, which model, cost.
- The processing happens remotely, on a model provider’s hardware, not on your machine. We are not going to pretend otherwise. The Privacy Policy §4 sets out the whole path.
- We do not sell your writing or license it to anyone, and it is never published or shown to another user.
3. Accounts
One account per person. Keep your password to yourself; you are responsible for what happens under your account. You must be at least 16 years old. Under 16? Use VSProse through a parent’s or guardian’s account.
4. Pages, packs, and subscriptions
Right now, nothing here is on sale. Payments are not switched on: VSProse is in closed beta, beta access is free, and there is no path by which you can be charged. This section is the term of sale that will apply when we do open payments, and we are publishing it in advance so it is not a surprise.
The unit of service is the page: roughly 250 words taken through an editing pass. Re-running a pass on the same chapter costs pages again — it is a fresh piece of work.
Your balance has up to three parts, and they behave differently.
Subscription allowance. Granted at the start of each billing period.

Allowance pages expire at the end of the billing period. Unused pages do not roll over. If your subscription ends, or a renewal payment fails, the allowance stops.

Owned pages never expire, are never taken away by a subscription change, and remain usable if your subscription lapses (with Standard-tier features). See §10 on shutdown.
Promotional allowance. From time to time we give away a free promotional allowance of 30 pages on a campaign we have designated — the same 30 pages as the $12.99 Chapter Pack, at no cost. It is one per person, ever, it costs you nothing and asks for no credit card, and it expires 30 days after it lands in your account. Because it is honoured when paid access opens, the 30 days run from then, not from the day you claimed it. This allowance is not a purchase and never earns Founding Author status (§5).
Consumption order: promotional-allowance pages first, then subscription allowance, then owned pages — shortest-lived first, so nothing expires under you while you still have it.
Other terms of sale:
- Starter Pack can be bought once, on a first purchase only. Any earlier purchase ends eligibility permanently, and a refund does not restore it.
- Book Pack also banks one month of Pro, once per person ever. Nothing starts when you buy it. It becomes redeemable when the Story Editor features are released, and we will tell you when that happens. It is an internal grant: no credit card, no charge, and it does not count as a paid subscription for the Founding Author programme (§5).
- Pro will be purchasable from launch. The Story Editor features that Pro exists for are being released incrementally. We will not give you a date, because we do not have one. Buy Pro for what it does on the day you buy it, not for what we hope it will do.
- Prices are shown at checkout. We can change prices going forward; a price change never touches pages you already own or a period you have already paid for.
- Pages are a unit of service, not money. They cannot be transferred between accounts, exchanged for cash, or resold.
5. Founding Author
This section is the whole of the Founding Author offer. If any advertisement of ours says otherwise, this section is what you can hold us to.
How you become one. The first 100 people to pay for a subscription become Founding Authors. Either tier counts. The trigger is your first paid subscription invoice — the moment money actually changes hands.
Signing up does not earn it. Joining the waitlist does not earn it. A free grant of pages — including closed-beta access and a promotional allowance — does not earn it. Only a paid subscription does. Some numbers may be held back for closed-beta participants; a held number is still only issued when that person takes a paid subscription.
What you get.
- Double your monthly page allowance, at the normal price. Standard: 100 pages a month instead of 50. Pro: 200 instead of 100. The multiplier follows whichever tier you are on.
- A Founding Author number, from 1 to 100. It is yours and nobody else’s.
Packs are never doubled. The multiplier applies to the subscription allowance only. It is extra pages, not a discount — the price is the ordinary price.
The condition — read this one. The doubled allowance applies for as long as your subscription is active. It is not a benefit you carry while unsubscribed: with no subscription there is no monthly allowance to double. If you see the words “for life” in our marketing, they mean for the life of your subscription, and this sentence is the one that governs.
If you cancel or lapse.
- You keep your number. We do not take it back and we do not give it to anyone else.
- The doubled allowance stops, along with the allowance itself.
- If you subscribe again — a month later or three years later — your number is still yours, and the doubled allowance resumes with it.
- Your slot is not refilled. The first 100 are the first 100. A lapse does not open a place for someone else, and numbers are never reissued to a different person.
If we refund the invoice that earned it. If we refund your first subscription payment — the one that made you a Founding Author — the status and the number are removed and the slot goes back into the pool. You were, in the end, not charged. Refunds of later renewal payments do not affect your status.
When it closes. The offer closes once all 100 numbers have been issued. We may decide to issue further Founding Author numbers at some later date, on whatever terms we set then. We are not promising that, and we are not ruling it out. What we are telling you is what is true of the first hundred.
6. Closed beta
VSProse is in closed beta. If you are in it, these terms apply to you with the differences below, until the beta ends.
Getting in. The beta is application-based and admission is ours to give. We read applications by hand and admit in small batches. We favour people with a real manuscript actually in progress. We are not obliged to admit anyone, and we will not always be able to say why.
What it costs. Nothing. Your pages are provisioned by us as a grant. We ask for no credit card and we cannot charge you — there is no payment path in the beta.
- Beta pages do not expire and a subscription change cannot remove them.
- Beta access never earns Founding Author status (§5). Only a paid subscription does.
- Testers who take a paid subscription when paid access launches also receive, once, one Book Pack (300 owned pages plus the banked Pro-month entitlement described in §4), credited to their account at no charge.
What we ask of you. Three things: use VSProse on a real manuscript, answer two short feedback check-ins of roughly ten minutes each, and — only if you want to — let us quote you.
Quotes are opt-in, one quote at a time. We show you the exact words and where they would appear, and you say yes or no. Silence is a no. You choose whether you are named or initialled.
Beta software has bugs. Keep backups of your manuscript, as you would anyway. We may change, break, or withdraw features during the beta with no notice, and we may end the beta or a particular person’s access at any time.
7. Refunds and cancellation
The Refund Policy is published separately and forms part of these terms. As long as nothing is on sale there is nothing to refund. When payments open, in short:
- Packs are refundable within 14 days if less than 20% of that pack’s pages have been used.
- A subscription period is refundable only if none of that period’s allowance has been used.
- Cancelling is free and always available. Billing stops; your subscription runs to the end of the period you have paid for.
If you are a consumer in the EU or the UK, read Refund Policy §4 on the 14-day right of withdrawal.
8. Acceptable use
Please don’t:
- turn the service into a bulk-processing API, or drive it with a script;
- share one account between people to pool page allowances, or make extra accounts to claim a one-per-person offer more than once;
- submit text you do not have the right to submit;
- submit unlawful content;
- attack, probe, or try to break the service, or work around its limits.
You are responsible for having the right to submit the text you submit.
9. What we promise about the AI, and what we do not
We warrant the mechanics: pages you pay for are delivered as editing capacity, and the service does what §1 says it does.
We do not warrant the literary quality of any individual suggestion. AI models can be wrong, inconsistent, or tone-deaf. That is precisely why every suggestion is a proposal you have to accept. VSProse is not a substitute for a human editor, and nothing it produces is professional, publishing, or legal advice. The final judgement over your manuscript is yours — by design, not by disclaimer.
10. Availability, changes, and shutdown
We aim for continuous availability and cannot guarantee it: maintenance happens, and model providers have outages. During the closed beta in particular, treat availability as best-effort.
We may change or remove features going forward. If we ever discontinue the service, we will give 90 days’ notice. Because your manuscript lives on your own disk and owned pages stay usable until shutdown, you cannot lose your work when we go away.
We may suspend an account for a material breach of §8, with notice and a chance to reply — except where the breach is serious enough that waiting would cause harm.
11. Liability
In plain words: if we cause you loss deliberately or through gross negligence, we are liable, and no clause here changes that. For ordinary mistakes, we are liable only where we have broken a duty that goes to the heart of this agreement, and then only up to what you have paid us in the 12 months before it happened. Since beta access is free, for a beta tester that amount is zero — which is another way of saying the beta is offered as-is.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including for personal injury. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are untouched by anything in this document.
12. Law and disputes
Swiss law applies, and the courts at our Swiss domicile have jurisdiction.
If you are a consumer, that does not take anything away from you: the mandatory consumer-protection law of your country of residence, and its courts, remain available to you.
13. Changes to these terms
We will announce material changes by email 30 days before they take effect. Using the service after that date means you accept them. If you would rather not, cancel — §7 applies.
