A professional-grade edit of your first chapter, freeGet 30 pages of professional editing, freeCopy, Line and Proofread*
Thirty pages, the same thirty as our $12.99 Chapter Pack. This is the actual editor, running on our own sales copy. Drive it.
How the free chapter works
- Leave your email above. That reserves your free chapter edit and your place in the first group of writers on the platform. One chapter per person.
- The closed beta opens soon. You paste your chapter in, up to thirty pages, and VSProse makes its editing passes over it, one job at a time. That’s the copy edit, the line edit, and the proofread.
- Every change lands as a diff. Take it, refuse it, or rewrite it your way, then export the chapter with your decisions in it.
What the free edit includes
Up to thirty pages of your manuscript, about 7,500 words. A page is roughly 250 words, and every page goes through all three passes:
- Copy edit
- grammar, usage, consistency
- Line edit
- rhythm, word choice, the sound of the sentence
- Proofread
- the last sweep, after everything else
The same thirty pages as our $12.99 Chapter Pack. One chapter per person, no credit card.
Use the wait
The same signup starts The Three Passes, a free five-email course on editing a chapter by hand. Each email works one pass on a real passage; you follow along on your own pages. By the time the beta opens you’ll have a hand-edited chapter, and a free VSProse edit waiting to check it against.
Three questions we get first
When does my chapter get edited?
When the closed beta opens. Your signup reserves the edit now; we email you the day it’s ready, and you have thirty days from then to run your chapter. It doesn’t have to be chapter one; any chapter up to thirty pages qualifies. The editor above works today, and so does the course.
What happens to my manuscript?
You paste a chapter into the editor and VSProse runs the passes on it. Your text is held in memory for the seconds a run takes and is never written to our disk or our database, so there is nothing on our side to keep afterwards. Running a pass does mean sending that text out through OpenRouter to the model providers we work with, and we will give you the current model list on request. The suggestions come straight back to you as diffs. No other user ever sees a word of your book, and nothing is published anywhere. How we run the company, including how we use AI, is public at vsprose.com/how-we-work.
Is this an AI writing tool?
No. It’s editing software, the family Grammarly and ProWritingAid live in, built for fiction. It suggests changes to prose you already wrote and never drafts prose of its own. There is AI inside, doing the reading a freelance editor bills four figures for; that’s how a first chapter can be free. Your words stay yours: nothing in your chapter changes until you accept the change.
